Stem Cell Therapy

What are stem cells?

Stem cells are the underlying foundation for regenerative medicine, which seeks to enhance your body’s own ability to repair and regenerate aging cells and tissue structures.

Medical science has shown that your body holds stem cells in reserve to act as an ongoing and renewable source of cellular repair and tissue regeneration. Certain types of stem cells can transform into cells your body might need to maintain good health.

When injected into an aging or damaged joint, for instance, stem cells can boost your body’s ability to rebuild and replace worn cartilage. Stem cell action also triggers or recruits natural proteins such as collagen and anti-inflammatory substances that can help reduce pain as your joint heals.

Where do stem cells come from?

The stem cells used at OC Wellness: Michael Grossman, MD are adult mesenchymal stem cells. These stem cells are extracted from your fat cells, processed, and then delivered to the targeted treatment area. This takes place on the same day in one procedure.

What conditions can stem cell therapy help?

Research is ongoing, but stem cell therapy has shown very promising results in helping with:

  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Cardiac diseases
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED)
  • Orthopedic issues, such as degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis)
  • Neurological disorders
  • Renal failure
  • Pulmonary diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Skin disorders, including difficult-to-treat lichen sclerosus

Is stem cell therapy safe?

While the therapy has not yet completed the time-consuming process required for FDA approval, clinical trials show it’s a safe and often very effective therapy when administered by an experienced professional like Dr. Grossman.

Is everyone a candidate for stem cell therapy?

Not everyone is a candidate for the therapy and not every condition responds to treatment with stem cell therapy. That’s why Dr. Grossman sees you for a consultation and medical evaluation before recommending stem cell therapy. If you’re not a candidate, he may suggest another regenerative treatment, such as hormone replacement for lichen sclerosus, which is most common in postmenopausal women.
