PRP

What are platelets?

Platelets are a naturally occurring component of your blood. They’re produced in your bone marrow and travel throughout your body via blood vessels. Your body uses these tiny cells to initiate clotting at a wound site, deliver growth and healing factors to worn or damaged soft tissue structures, and attract stem cells to assist with tissue rebuilding.

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy?

PRP therapy uses blood plasma to deliver a highly concentrated dose of platelets to an injured area via injection. This helps promote your body’s natural healing process. The platelets are obtained from your own blood supply, effectively eliminating the risk of infection or rejection.

What conditions can PRP therapy help treat?

PRP contains and releases several different growth factors that stimulate bone and soft tissue healing, including the growth of new blood vessels. Fibroblast growth factor (FGF), for instance, helps promote skin repair after an injury. Collagen-stimulating growth factor triggers new collagen production for tissue and cell repair and rebuilding.

Physicians are using PRP therapy to successfully:

  • Treat erectile dysfunction
  • Repair skin damage resulting from sun exposure and the aging process
  • Speed healing of a wound following surgery or injury
  • Promote healing of cartilage and other soft tissue structures within aging or damaged joints

PRP can also restore declining sexual pleasure due to tissue changes associated with aging, such as vaginal atrophy in women and decreased erection strength in men.

What is the PRP therapy process like?

Much like you would expect for a lab test, Dr. Grossman first draws a small amount of your blood into a specimen tube. He then places the blood in a special machine (a centrifuge) that spins it fast enough to separate the platelets from the other components in your blood.

This highly concentrated dose of platelets is then injected into the targeted treatment area. Because PRP therapy uses your own blood supply, there is a little-to-zero risk of allergic reaction, infection, or intolerance, which is sometimes the case with steroid injections and other treatments used for joint pain and other conditions.
