When does menopause occur?

Strictly speaking, menopause occurs when you have not had a menstrual period for 12 months. However, your body begins to ready itself for menopause several years before that. Even as early as your mid-30s, your ovaries begin to produce less estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. For most women, the perimenopausal phase begins in their 40s and menopause hits at age 50-55.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

During perimenopause, you may notice that your periods are shorter or more irregular. You may also note a loss of energy and decreased sexual desire. As you progress closer to actual menopause, you may develop:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Abrupt mood changes
  • Problems with concentration
  • Changes in hair and skin texture
  • Loss of muscle strength
  • Vaginal dryness and pain with sexual intercourse

All these symptoms are in response to hormonal fluctuations and imbalances, which create real physical changes as well as the “emotional” issues many women find so difficult to deal with.

What physical changes are associated with menopause?

It’s different for every woman and some of the physical changes may be due to aging as much as menopause, but you may be at increased risk for:

  • Osteoporosis, decreased bone density
  • Heart disease
  • Problems with bladder and bowel function
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Poor skin elasticity and increased wrinkling
  • Decreased muscle power and tone

What can I do to protect my health during menopause?

There’s no way to stop the clock, but many of the treatments offered at OC Wellness: Michael Grossman, MD effectively stall the deterioration of your health as you age, including the aging effects of menopause.

You can start by having your hormone levels checked as early as possible, even by age 40. At OC Wellness: Michael Grossman, MD, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is often the mainstay of anti-aging treatment strategies.

BHRT can:

  • Increase lean muscle mass and decrease body fat
  • Restore sexual libido and improve sexual performance
  • Increase skin elasticity and help prevent wrinkles
  • Improve memory
  • Improve your energy levels
